Our guides in Cuba

Making us feel right at home

Today I want to talk about and thank our marvelous guides on our Cuba trip. On arrival in Cuba we were met by Lazaro who was our main tour guide from Cuban Cultural Travel. Lazaro was amazing. Fluent in Spanish, English, and Russian, he was able to answer every question posed to him. He had great stories and always had a big smile. Immediately he taught us an important Cuban "F" word: Flexibility.

When we got to our bus we met our driver Antonio (Tony). Tony didn't speak English, but he was a super professional driver and communicated with his bright smile. Shortly into the trip he learned "happy happy joy joy." A great pleasure to be around.

Next up were our photo guides, Nestor Marti and Alain Gutierrez. Two wonderful photographers with very different backgrounds. Nestor is a fine art photographer and Alain is a photo journalist. A high point of our week was a panel discussion with Nestor and Alain showing us samples of their work and talking about life as a photographer in Cuba.

Alain took us to visit family, bringing out a box of childhood photos, and he even helped carry a case of bottled water from a grocery store back to our hotel!

Finally, on our trip to the Vinales Valley we met up with Yaniel Luis Alvarerz from Discover Vinalaes. Yaniel took us to a community art school, a tobacco farm, a tobacco sorting facility, and a great organic farm (Finca Agrocologica) lunch.
